overdue {myka/11, distracted kiss prompt}

Somedays, sure, it was all robots and Daleks and psychotic aliens, but Myka had been more or less used to living her life in constant peril when she worked at the Warehouse. He'd warned her beforehand that it would be dangerous and that he would do all he could to protect her, but the unspoken truth was that all he could do might not be enough. Myka reminded him of her life before, the life she lived before him and her were them.

"Warehouse agent, remember? My options there are crazy, evil or dead. I have a feeling traveling with you might be an improvement."

And in many ways, it was. The TARDIS was an Artifact in of itself, although it was imbued with sentience beyond anything that had ever graced the Warehouse (other than, perhaps, the Warehouse itself; at least, that was what Myka believed). The TARDIS had come around the longer Myka traveled with the Doctor, in little ways. It was easier to find the bathroom these days, and the clothes in the wardrobe fit her better now. Myka didn't know if the TARDIS was starting to like her for what she offered to their daily adventures, or just because it started to realize that Myka wasn't there for any other reason than because she was in love.

Well, maybe that wasn't the only reason. But it was a big one.

When her birthday came up, he had gone out of his way to borrow a book she would love from one of the biggest intergalactic libraries time and space had ever seen. It wasn't like one of his liquid books; it was a psychic book, he had explained, not unlike the "choose your own adventure" variety that Myka remembered from her childhood.

The problem that came with living in a time machine, however, was that while time was relative to you, it didn't mean the rest of the universe didn't follow the rules.

"What is happening?" The TARDIS was rolling, sending Myka off-kilter, and she grabbed one of the railings in the console room. She was fresh out of the shower, her wet curls clinging to her face. She barely had time to wash the shampoo out when she felt the first hit.

"It's a Librarian convoy," the Doctor replied, rushing around the console to grab his viewscreen and stare at it.

"Why are librarians trying to kill us?" The TARDIS rocked again, and the Doctor was careful not to meet her eyes.

"Did I forget to mention that they have a very strict overdue policy?"

Sometimes, Myka suspected she might kill before anyone else had the chance.

Her adrenaline kicked in, though, and she bolted to the console. She had traveled with him long enough to get an idea of how just about everything on the TARDIS worked, at least mechanically. There was a lever for this, and a button for that, and between his sonic screwdriver and her Tesla, they had gotten out of worse situations.

"Can't we just... I don't know, call them and give them the book back?"

"The only reason they haven't destroyed us yet is because we still have the book."

"You checked out a book from a library whose overdue policy is execution?"

He still wasn't looking at her. "Well, technically, you checked it out."

Myka shrieked. "I can not believe you!"

"My account was already delinquent enough for another 13 regenerations!"

"Oh my God!"

Arguing wasn't doing much for their situation, and if Myka had to be honest, she wasn't actually angry. This was pretty much a typical Thursday afternoon for them, excitement and near death all in one. She grabbed hold of the console and inched around it, clamoring for the nearest lever. "Let's just jump back to right after we checked the book out..."

"No!" The Doctor slipped in front of her, blocking her access to the console. "Not that lever. Never that lever. Only I get to touch that lever."

"Oh, you arrogant-" The TARDIS rolled over again and Myka nearly fell off her feet, grabbing him for support. His hands slipped around her hips to steady her and he grinned at her.

"Come on, you have to admit this is fun."

They managed to lose the convoy by crash-landing the TARDIS into a moon's crater. The soil in the moon was made out of something that no human could pronounce (he didn't say it quite that nicely, but Myka got the drift), and it scrambled the Librarian sensors. They had repairs ahead of them, and then choices to make once those were done.

"You know I can fly the TARDIS just fine, right?" Myka said. She had been delegated to sitting-in-a-chair-near-the-console duty, passing him tools as he worked on fixing the console. "And just for the record, this isn't my fault. It's your fault."

"My fault? You should have checked the return slip."

"We live in a time machine!" His head popped up, and the look in his eyes made her both furious and deliriously happy. He was teasing her. The Doctor's head disappeared again and she glowered at him, trying to stay at least a little angry so he might grasp the gravity of the situation. "So, you won't let me fly the TARDIS. You won't help me fix her. Why am I here again, exactly? Am I just your human eye candy?"

A scoff came out from the under the console and his face appeared again, looking her over in that way that made her stomach flip. "You are perfectly acceptable eye candy." And again, back under the console.

Myka hopped out of the chair and ducked under with him. He had his sonic screwdriver out, repairing some wiring that hung out in bundles of sparking knots. She sat behind him, her arms curling around his waist as he worked. She leaned down and pressed her mouth to his back, feeling him tense beneath his clothing.

"What are you doing?" he hissed. Sometimes, it was way too easy.

"My job," she replied, her fingers brushing up his chest. She readjusted herself, licking her lips before she pressed them against his bare neck. "Since I'm just eye candy," she whispered.

"Myka, stop it. I'm trying to work."

"Me too." She was trying not to giggle, her breath hot against him as she caught his ear between her teeth. He hissed again, followed by a gentle moan when she pressed her lips to his neck again. He was still making a valiant effort to repair the wiring in front of him, but Myka was already counting down how long that would last. Every time his hands steadied she kissed him again, on his neck, or his temple, or his shoulder. He seemed to make quick work of the repairs after that, at least when his fingers weren't trembling, but Myka knew his speed had little to do with making her stop touching and everything to do with him wanting to touch her back.

Before long, he pulled her up from under the console and wrapped his arm around her waist, gesturing to the ship around them with the other. "See, good as new."

"But now what? The convoy is still out there. And the minute we leave... whatever about this moon whammied their sensors stops working and they're going to see us."

"That's the easy part." He bopped her nose with his finger, and she scrunched her face in response. "We're just going to go back to right after we checked the book out-"

"That was what I suggested in the first place!" Her voice was probably shrill enough to shatter the TARDIS front windows. There was a smirk on his face that Myka swore she was going to punch right off.

"Obviously. But I'm the Doctor, I can't let you think you have all the good ideas."

She shrugged out of his hold around her and crossed her arms, fuming. The Doctor, on occasion, seemed to sense when he had really pissed her off and his face fell. For as angry as she was at him, she hated when he looked like that. Putting a smile on his face had become one of the most important things she did every day, and seeing him sad made her heart break every time.

"Fine. Let's just go return the book." She was ready to storm off back to their room, or the library, or somewhere other than with him when he caught her arm and brought her back to him.

"Do you want to pull the lever?" His glance moved from her to the console.

"You're going to let me fly the ship?"

"I'm going to let you pull the lever," he clarified.

He had never been good at the words. Myka was, and she didn't hesitate to let him know how much she loved him, how much she cared. He was terrible with the words. But the actions, well... The actions he had nearly mastered, at least with her.

Myka positioned herself in front of the console and the Doctor pressed himself behind her. She could feel every inch of him flush with her as he guided her hand up, letting it rest on the handle. And then, he kissed her under her ear, his lips a feather across her skin, and her stomach did a flip. She tried to wrap her fingers around it but they trembled, his breath hot against her as he kissed her shoulder this time, then her back.

"What are you waiting for?" he asked her, kissing her arm.

"For you to stop," she told him, her voice wavering. She was too afraid to pull the lever down when he was touching her like that. Which, she then realized, was probably his plan. It was half getting even, half some kind of feral want that overcame the both of them when they got like this. As soon as his tongue dragged down the shell of her ear, she turned around to face him and the lever was completely forgotten for the time being.

Although they waited out the night on the moon's crater in a flurry of bedsheets (in between, of course, the Doctor yammering on about the moon's properties and the small colony that would inhabit it in 2000 years from now), reality set in the next day when they returned and found the convoy still laying in wait. Myka uttered a disapproving sigh.

She hadn't even had the chance to finish the book yet.

"Oh, come on." He escorted her back to the console, gesturing to the lever. "The book probably isn't going to return itself. Only a few races so far have invented that."

Myka snorted and let him push some coordinates in before she took a breath. She wrapped her hand around the handle, giving him another look as if making sure she still had his approval. He nodded at her.

"You need help?"

"I think I got it," she told him, her eyebrows lifting. "You're not a bad teacher... for alien eye candy, anyway." He grinned.

She pulled the lever, launching them into what was, no doubt, going to be another wild adventure.

"No glove, no love."

✯ First Impressions

❅ VISUAL: Besides her 5'9'' height, the most striking thing about Myka is her curly head of hair. She occasionally will straighten it, but for the most part she wears it loose and curly around her shoulders. (photo)
❅ FASHION: Originally, Myka started out wearing traditional pant suits, but as she grew more comfortable with herself and her role at the Warehouse, she also started wearing more casual clothes. Her normal outfit generally consists of a nice blouse and jeans. (photo)
❅ DEMEANOUR: Myka is a little shy and not very outgoing, and it shows in the way she carries herself. She doesn't like to stand out, and she is used to blending in because of her secret service training. When she is interrogating someone or protecting herself, however, she can become incredibly fierce.
❅ AURAL: Like her demeanor, Myka is soft spoken. She had a gentle voice, but it also reflects the fun loving aspects of her personality. (video)
❅ OLFACTORY: Myka isn't huge on perfumes or sprays, so she probably mostly smells like the dusty shelves of the Warehouse and the old books she reads.
❅ MENTAL INFORMATION: Kate has no experience with telepaths and no ability to block them out. She is, however, a very convincing liar, to the point that she can convince herself of her own lies, and that might be a factor for telepaths to take into account. Kate suffers from PTSD. If you character can or would like to read her mind, the best thing to do is contact me and I can tell you what your character might need to know.
❅ POWER INFORMATION: Myka has an eidetic memory. At [community profile] alteredstates, her river power is literary animation.

✯ Permissions

❅ BACKTAGGING: Please do, I live off of backtagging!
❅ FOURTHWALLING: I'm not opposed to it depending on the context, but please ask me first.
❅ PHYSICAL AFFECTION: Myka doesn't mind a little bit of basic touching, and hugging and kissing are definitely okay with people she is familiar or romantically involved with.
❅ PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: Myka is trained in hand to hand combat, fencing, and knows her way around a number of weapons. She will definitely fight back when threatened, but she will not usually throw the first punch.
❅ RELATIONSHIPS: Myka is already in a relationship at both her games.

Character Information

Character Name: Myka Bering
Canon: Warehouse 13
Canon Point: 4x13 "The Big Snag"
Character Journal: [personal profile] thedetails

Appearance: Myka is 5 foot 9 and average size. She's a secret service agent so she's in pretty good shape, and she tends to favor comfortable outfits like flowy shirts and stretch pants. Myka has long black hair that she usually wears down in unkempt curls, but she does straighten it occasionally because she can never decide which she likes more. She has two tattoos, an infinity symbol on her outer right ankle, and a Shakespeare quote on her inner right ankle ("Simply the thing I am shall make me live.").

Myka has pretty curly hair.
Although sometimes she wears it straight.
And sometimes she is way sexy.

Age: 31
History: Myka at the Warehouse 13 Wiki
Personality:

Myka is a full-blown nerd. She grew up in Colorado Springs, under the safety of her father's bookstore, Bering and Sons. The Berings had no sons, however, only two daughters. Tracy was the popular and outgoing daughter, while Myka was the withdrawn "weird" one, who favored reading classics and learning languages over fitting in socially. She was also a tomboy, and was a member of the Girl Scouts and took fencing lessons in high school. She never really fit in and this resulted in her developing an icy exterior. When we first meet her, Myka is off-putting to the point of almost being hostile, much to the chagrin of her new partner, the laid-back Pete Lattimer.

But Myka has her reasons; she never felt like she really could impress her father and growing up ultimately friendless, her snippy attitude and work-obsessed drive helped give her an outlet. Even a pre-law and pre-med education never really got her back in her father's good graces, and it wasn't until after she started working at the Warehouse that she was able to reconcile with him. She was recruited into the Secret Service after college, whereupon she fell in love with her (married, but legally separated) partner, Sam Martino. Sam was killed, and for a long time Myka carried the guilt for his death. It wasn't until her time at the Warehouse that she was truly forced to - quite literally - confront Sam's ghost and comes to term with his death, and also admit to herself that it wasn't her fault and she would have been unable to save him due to the involvement of an artifact. Her accepting his death becomes a turning point for her, and the Warehouse - an assignment that she original abhorred - became a safe haven and the home that she never before felt she had.

The Warehouse became Myka's home, and the people within it became her chosen family. Pete, her partner, is someone she deeply loves. The complete opposite of Myka in every way, Pete tends to function off gut feelings and flying by the seat of his pants while Myka prefers precision, planning and detail. He is like the annoying brother she never had, and the two always have each others back and share a special relationship that helps them work almost flawlessly as a unit. Artie is the Warehouse dad; at first, Myka was very distrusting of him and hated the fact that he insisted on withholding information from her. However, Artie has proved himself over the years for being a strong Warehouse supervisor and even though they still occasionally butt heads, they have developed a level of trust between them. Claudia Donovan is the Warehouse little sister; smart, spunky and sarcastic, Myka looks at Claudia as the most adult out of all of them and sees her for the strong, successful Caretaker she is destined to be. The newest arrival, Steve, is still someone Myka is getting to know but she knows how much Claudia adores him and views him as a member of their growing family.

Another important person to Myka - and someone who challenged her relationship with those in the Warehouse as well as her views of herself - is HG Wells. Although they didn't meet on the best of terms, as HG had seemingly allied with a Warehouse enemy, Myka felt drawn to her. It is most likely their shared love of literature that initially bonded them, but they both share a vast amount of similarities, to the point that Pete remarked a few times that the team had "Two Mykas." What Myka developed for HG is very similar to her relationship with Pete; she loves the woman deeply, and vouched for her as a ally of the Warehouse to get her onto the team. However, HG did eventually betray the Warehouse and Myka wore the guilt, much like she did after Sam's death. Myka viewed her assessment of HG as a failure, and this caused her to leave the Warehouse behind for a few months. Eventually she returned, however, realizing that her life was there now and she couldn't leave her family behind. Ultimately, HG returned to assist the Warehouse and saved the team, and Myka became more secure in her friendship with the other woman as well as in her own character judgement of others.

Her experiences in the Warehouse helped her come out of her shell, and Myka is no longer afraid to show her emotions to the people she cares about and trusts. While she is still the most serious of the bunch, she has loosened up considerably and is not afraid to tease, cry, show her affection or state what is exactly on her mind. Although she has gone through some rough experiences, Myka fights to not let them overtake her or change who she is.

Because of her fierce intellect is one of her strongest qualities, Myka is never afraid to show off the information she knows in any situation. Although her fellow agents tend to be very understanding (probably because the information she offers is usually very useful to their investigations), the ridiculous number of languages she speaks and her insurmountable intellect become a running gag in the show. However, Artie does expose this as a point of weakness for Myka, too; she worries that her intelligence comes off as condensation and she is unlikable because of it. It also becomes clear that although Myka comes off as a secure person, she is worried that she is unlovable and will spend her life alone. She clings to the Warehouse so tightly not only because the people she's grown to love are there, but because a hidden part of her is worried that they will be the only ones who will ever really love her and she will continue to be unliked and unaccepted by her peers.

By the middle of season four, Myka finds her life in turmoil once again. Diagnosed with ovarian cancer, she is faced the reality of her own mortality. She spends much of the episode struggling with how to tell Pete, playing out scenarios in her head of how he will react and constantly afraid of what kind of response it will elicit. When faced by an immortal countess who is struggling to find a way to become mortal, Myka's fears are clearly communicated when she reminds the woman that mortality means eventually death. After breaking down she tells Pete that she has cancer, solidifying that the struggle to truly accept the confines of her own mortality will be a long road for her.

Chosen for Warehouse 13 based on her unyielding attention to detail, Myka is intelligent, well-read and boasts a photographic memory. She is also known for not being afraid to talk about her "feelings," something that Pete does not always particularly appreciate. She takes her losses extremely close to heart and is deeply critical of herself. But through it all, Myka is an extremely driven and persistent woman, and she's not afraid of the person that the Warehouse has helped her become.

Powers/Special Abilities: Myka has a photographic memory. Besides that, she is also skilled in hand-to-hand combat and sword fighting/fencing. She is fluent in multiple languages including English, Latin, French, Russian, Portuguese, Arabic, and Chinese.
River Power: Literary Animation. Myka is able to project narrative stories into reality by reading a book or story out loud. While she will not have any control over the movements or activities of the characters she creates in reality, but she will eventually be able to return them back to their texts on command.

Reason for Character Choice: My roommate got me into Warehouse 13 about a year back, and Myka is totally my type of character. I started playing her at Amat and have had a ton of fun with her, and I've been playing with the idea of bringing her here because I think she would be fun to play with a power and in this environment.
Additional Information: I am leg disabled.

Writing Samples

First-Person Transmission Sample: (from Amat)

[The feed springs to life, showing a woman with a mess of black curls framing her face. Her sweet, youthful look is counteracted by her wide-eyed concern, and her lips peeled back in a nervous grimace.]

Hello? Artie? Pete? Can you hear me?

Am I seriously in Greece? I can't be in Greece. I have something really serious going on here and I don't have TIME for Greece. [She taps the screen on the device, glancing down before clearing her throat nervously.] I'm not sure who is actually on the other side of this thing but a little help here? I need to know if any... one who is seeing this has come in contact with anything strange lately. Like, erm, an antique or something... [She looks around, frowning.] Okay, probably a bad question.

... Does anyone smell fudge?

Third-Person Log Sample: (from Amat)

Myka watched the other woman, her lips pressing together in a line as her eyes followed Helena to the window. She looked strangely regal and elegant, her stance a complete contradiction to the fact that she was wearing a simple button down shirt.

Shaking her head, Myka could feel her emotion stuck in her throat. Helena had just voiced the greatest fear that had been inside of her; even worse than the idea that an artifact was on the outside, because even then, they still had a chance of someone neutralizing it. But Claudia had been looking for an artifact for years with no luck and Myka couldn't help but think that maybe, just maybe, she was right.

"No way," Myka contradicted, which was stupid and thoughtless because she didn't have any evidence to back that up. "Helena, you don't understand. This has to be an artifact." She could feel that lump rising again in her throat, her tone edging on desperate, almost pleading as if HG somehow had the control to make it real. "I... I have to get home."

Myka felt her breath quickening and she stood up, moving across the room to dump the armful of books and papers in her hand onto the dresser. She kept her back turned to HG, gripping the top of the dresser so fiercely that her knuckles turned white.

"I know it might not be possible," she muttered, her voice wavering with emotion. She knew the truth - if Claudia couldn't find the artifact, if Nate and the Doctor and Leonardo Da Vinci couldn't figure it out - what made her think any of them could? They were trapped here, maybe for the rest of their lives.

"But I can't listen to this right now. I have to believe there's a way out of here." She needed something to live for, something beyond mothering Claudia and she wasn't going to find that here. That was all back home and getting back to her life there, her life at the Warehouse, was the only thing that made all of the shit she went through in the last month worth it. "You don't have to help me look but I can't do the brutal honesty, no light at the end of the tunnel thing right now."

AMATOMNES

Holly had been playing Claudia for a number of years at Amat and roped me into watching Warehouse 13 with the promise that I would end up picking up either Myka or Helena. The first episode I properly was the season 4 episode "Instinct," which was pretty confusing considering the amount of background I missed, but I started on the show from the beginning and found myself caught up by the time "Lost and Found" aired and apping Myka to Amat by the end of the season. This is only the second fastest I picked up a muse (the other being Alex Drake a number of years ago, after seeing her in about 5 minutes of the pilot episode of Ashes to Ashes and knowing I wanted to play her immediately), and it only took by the end of the pilot to know I'd be playing Myka by the end of the show.

I apped her in July, taking her from the end of What Matters Most, when Claudia is Bronzed and Myka tells Pete she has cancer. It was a prime point to take her from - she was emotionally compromised for the first time since the end of season 2, and in a way, that mindset helped her adjust to the island more quickly. In the last six months of the year, she found herself forging a friendship with Nate and Leonardo DaVinci and ending up with the Doctor for a collar partner (and falling for him, in a unique kind of way). She also has become close friends with Dr. Whale.

Her personal relationships with her canon mates was up and down, mostly due to her illness. Myka never told Claudia about the cancer, instead projecting her concerns into how Claudia would get on when Myka started to die, and their relationship became incredibly tense. However, once Claudia returned from her canon update, their friendship began to improve. By December, Claudia had hacked the network and discovered Myka's secret.

The most obvious relationship change was between that of Myka and HG Wells. Helena arrived in August and while things were tense due to the aftermath of "Instinct," both Helena and Myka found themselves actively fighting an undeniable attraction between the two of them. By October, Myka learned her cancer was terminal and she and Helena chose to take advantage of the time she has left to pursue a romantic relationship.

Myka ended the year on a more positive note - she received two goddess favors over the year, one for Pete (her pet ferret) and one on behalf of Claudia (for her computer). IN-CHARACTER INFORMATION

Name: Myka Ophelia Bering
Fandom: Warehouse 13
Age: 31
Canon Point: End 4x20, "The Truth Hurts"
Original Universe or Alternate Universe? OU

Personality:

Myka is a full-blown nerd. She grew up in Colorado Springs, under the safety of her parents bookstore, Bering and Sons. The Berings had no sons, however, only two daughters. Myka's sister was the popular and outgoing daughter, while Myka was the withdrawn "weird" one, who favored reading classics and learning languages over fitting in socially.

It wasn't until her time at the Warehouse that she was truly forced to - quite literally - confront Sam's ghost and comes to term with his death, and also admit to herself that it wasn't her fault and she would have been unable to save him.

Claudia Donovan is the Warehouse little sister; smart, spunky and sarcastic, Myka looks at Claudia as the most adult out of all of them and sees her for the strong, successful woman she is destined to be.

Ultimately, HG returned to assist the Warehouse and ultimately saved the team's life, and Myka still views her as one of her best friends.

By the end of season four, Myka finds her life in turmoil once again.

Background: History at Wiki
Other Notables: Myka has a photographic memory. At her canon point she just went into surgery to have a tumor removed caused by her cancer, but she'll probably be relieved to find she's cured of it when she arrives to the sanctum.
